About me:

“Tell you children about it, and let your children tell their children, and their children the next generation.” Joel 1:3

“Say after me” - A-ha, Take on Me

I create portraiture oil paintings, drawings, and prints that revolve around themes of storytelling, and the interplay between agelessness and transience. My studies in Studio Art and Communication have taken me from Bethany Lutheran College to Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence, Italy.

In the past, my ideas have been conveyed in mostly bold single pieces. As I move forward in my artistic career, I aim to mature my practice by creating full collections of work, as well as honing my subject focus and artistic style.

My works explore two basic questions:

What do we do now that we have always done?

What does that tell us about ourselves?

The way we know about things that humans have always done is through the passing of information from one generation to the next, or more simply, storytelling. This is what fascinates me! Rather than an interest in the idea being conveyed, I’m curious about the act of conveying itself: the movement of stories, thoughts, and lessons through time. I was raised and am a member of a very traditional, unchanging religion, which has exposed me to an intense clash between the ancient and the new. My experience with antiquity and the passing of traditions is extremely participatory, it’s actually a part of me. I have generations behind me, and know there are generations before me; you and I are surrounded by a watching past and a listening future.

What will we say?

Originally from Birmingham, AL, Norah Kratz attended high school at a boarding school in Watertown, SD. Art had never been anything more than a hobby until she attended college at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN. She started as an English major and will graduate as a double major in Communication and Studio Art with an emphasis in 2D mediums, with a minor in English and concentration in multi-media writing. She plans to attend graduate school and hopes to one day teach art at a community or university level, as well as continuing to create and exhibit her own work.
